Some of it will come from non-conventional or alternative energy sources including renewable sources. Alternative energy is expected to play a greater role in the nation's future energy production. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy has set the goal of tripling the amount of electricity from wind generation sources by 2020. Siemens is a world-class innovator in the field of alternative power sources. Our wind turbines business is helping to generate emission-free electricity through a full-range of wind-driven generators. We can also plan, build, operate and maintain wind power farms – both onshore and offshore. (See case study on the last page of this section.) Siemens has also developed modernization technology to substantially increase the energy output and life-extension of nuclear power plants, another emission-free source of power. The Future Factors driving today's energy markets – increased demand and environmental concerns – make developing innovation imperative. Siemens is fully invested in meeting the needs for increased energy supply through a variety of environmentally friendly sources. Ethanol, for example, is an important renewable fuel and a critical focus area for Siemens. Nearly 70 percent of new ethanol plants being constructed in the U.S. today use automation products, services and support from Siemens. Fuel cells are another significant area of innovation. They use the cleanest of all fuels, hydrogen, to convert the chemical energy directly into power. They are among the most exciting and promising new power technologies and Siemens is the world leader in solid oxide fuel cells. We will continue to invest heavily in R&D to develop even more advanced technologies for Siemens' diverse portfolio of sustainable resources aimed at keeping our power needs and our concern for the environment in harmony for generations to come.
