Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 7) A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR MESSAGEÊ FROMÊ THEÊ CHAIR Monday, February 23rd, I woke to two feet of fresh snow in my area. I was very surprised for two reasons. First, it wasn’t in the forecast and second, it wasn’t snowing at all when I went to bed late Sunday evening. There was so much snow I broke a belt on my snow blower trying to clear a path in my driveway – and that was only a few feet from the garage door and certainly no where near the end of the drive. No way I was getting to the office that day! Fortunately for me, and my hospital, I can work efficiently from home so there was no impact on any MEDITECH users. I wasn’t the only person unable to make it in that day; many emails arrived indicating someone could not make it to the office. If you are an I.T. person like me and can work remotely, the impact on the organization and daily operations can be minimal. Technology, when used correctly, can benefit an organization during extraordinary circumstances or conditions. As bad as the snowstorm was, the inconvenience and poor driving conditions only lasted one day. What if the situation was such that we could not reasonably predict when things would return to normal? Most companies would try to adjust and adapt work processes, budgets, and expenses to accommodate the new reality. In July of 2008 your MUSE Board of Directors made a decision to adjust the products and services offered to our members – you, the individual and your hospital! During our summer board meeting we talked at length on the subject of shrinking educational budgets and how MUSE, as your primary source for MEDITECH-related training and educational services, could help stretch those precious dollars. We established several goals for the staff to achieve this year: • Use technology to deliver quality services to our membership. To achieve this goal, we established a relationship with WebEx to host our webcasts. We’ve seen an immediate improvement in the quality of the sessions. I trust your experience has been the same. • Offer more webcasts covering the hot issues facing hospitals today. Along with the new titles, ensure the most popular sessions are offered more than once to provide everyone an opportunity to attend. Check out the MUSE calendar for a list of upcoming sessions. • Offer more mini-MUSE events, which are focused on a specific topic or related topics. • Replace the regional conferences that required the majority of attendees to travel a significant distance to attend, with a program offering similar educational, training, networking, and vendor exhibit time, but located closer to you. This new program is entitled Mighty MUSE David Zelward System Administrator Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation PO Box 5200 Saint John NB E2L 4L4 Ph 506 648 6138 Fx 506 635 1172 chairperson@museweb.org and, when fully developed, will see MUSE host events in many locations throughout North America. Our goal is to lower your total cost of attending an event by reducing time away, travel, food, and hotel expenses, while elevating the value and content . • The largest event each year for MUSE is the International Conference. The MUSE executive team is determined to lower our cost of hosting/producing this event and pass the savings on to you. A good example this year is the reduced room rate at local hotels. Alan Sherbinin and his staff were able to achieve through tough negotiations. Now, on a more personal note, this is my final message as chair of the MUSE Board. The Vancouver International Conference marks the end of my term and the very capable Martha Sullivan succeeds me! It has been my pleasure and good fortune to serve on the International Board for six years and to have had the opportunity to work with so many wonderful volunteers at all levels of the organization. To all of you I say Thank You for welcoming me into your lives, and for your contributions that made my time with MUSE so enjoyable. Sincerely, David Zelward Chair, MUSE International Board SPRING 2009 MUSE INTERNATIONAL 6 Table of Contents Feed for the Digital Edition of Muse Matters - Spring 2009 Muse Matters - Spring 2009 Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 1) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 2) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 3) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 4) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 5) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 6) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 7) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 8) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 9) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 10) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 11) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 12) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 13) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 14) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 15) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 16) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 17) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 18) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 19) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 20) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 21) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 22) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 23) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 24) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 25) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 26) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 27) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 28) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 29) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 30) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 31) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 32) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 33) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 34) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 35) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 36) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 37) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 38) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 39) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 40) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 41) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 42) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 43) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 44) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 45) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 46) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 47) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 48) http://www.nxtbookMEDIA.com
