When Cromer first heard about this opportunity, it piqued her curiosity through her love of adventure. “I thought it would be quite adventurous to travel to the other side of the world, dive into a completely different culture, learn, and teach positive principles of servant leadership and integrity to possible future leaders in China's businesses and government,” she exclaims. With time such an important commodity, Cromer works hard and sacrifices to fit volunteering into her schedule. “You just have to make it a priority,” she says. “We all have 24 hours each day and we all feel like it's not enough. My husband always says people will ultimately do what they want to do. I do have to utilize vacation time or non-paid time off to volunteer in China,” she says. In closing, Cromer shares a story about her volunteer experience in China. “One night we participated in a cross-cultural party. Everybody dressed nicely and enjoyed a night filled with karaoke music, trying new foods, playing sports, and enjoying each other’s company. It was so wonderful to see all the Chinese students whose lives involve stress, pressure, and responsibilities, just cut loose, smile really big joyful smiles, and have a lot of fun. I loved hearing them rock out on karaoke to their favorite Chinese pop songs too!” Heather is second from the right and wearing a purple shirt. Europe to learn about servant leadership and integrity. Last summer Cromer travelled to China for 14 days to serve as a team leader working with these students. She attended and worked with students through seminars on everything from concepts of globalization and leadership, to how to put together a resume, team building activities, and focus group discussions. “Our world is becoming more globalized every day,” she says. “We have to start taking responsibility for the youth of other countries, as well as the United States, to ensure a positive future.
