Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 17) Discouraging Times� IThink Not! has become the core of operations to our customers and the employees. We have approximately 25 servers, five of which run our MEDITECH environment, and a host of complimentary servers all integrated towards the same purpose: helping HMH to become the health care delivery system of choice for the people we serve. We do this with experience and dedication as a team, including seven full-time employees operating from 7am – 10:30pm Monday through Friday. Three of us have been at HMH since the infancy days and the remaining have been here approximately two years. Analysts help with hardware and technology folks help with software; I do a little of both when they let me. Communication is truly the key and lending a helping hand to each other is our secret. Our team supports more than 300 peripherals, hardware in six physician practices and two remote offices. Our customers include approximately 280 employees, all of which use the computer system in some fashion. We have implemented CPOE on the inpatient side and in the Emergency Department, so doctors have now become a direct customer of our department. Administration has supported and encouraged the continual movement of technology into our clinical departments. To Nestled within the spelling of that word is date, we are approximately 90% electronic in all documentation. So, how do I manage in these tough economic times? Well, I keep doing what I’ve always done since my first steps here at HMH; I thirst for knowledge, try to lead by example, and welcome the challenges. With capital being frozen, no out of state travel, but still expected to continue the forward movement of technology, we just become more creative and dependent on our survival skills. It is a challenge to make things work without buying new technology. Creativity is rewarding when it works and a teacher when it doesn’t. I think back to the challenges I faced in programming when the code didn’t work the way I envisioned and the thrill of that moment when just moving a comma or a character left or right made it all work. I say to myself, “Wow!” I have loved my journey here at HMH. As I round third, heading for home (retirement) within the next 5-10 years, I will do as my girl scout leader always taught us, “leave where you are better than you found it.” The next IT Director will be ‘courage’ smarter, eager and willing to face the challenges before him or her and embrace change. I have lived change and I thank my organization for the opportunity. Discouraging times - I think not! Discouragement is a perception I refuse to embrace. Nestled within the spelling of that word is ‘courage’ and that is how I manage a small 61-bed rural acute hospital’s Information Technology Department.
