Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 16) Discouraging Times IThink Not! Today’ s economy could be discouraging for many of us in our personal and professional lives. However, it is during times like this I reflect on what it is we are all destined for and what forces of nature put us in this exact spot at this exact time. I have to believe we all have a purpose that will outlast any particular moment. Let me begin by telling you about Harrison Memorial Hospital (HMH). We are a 61-bed acute care facility nestled in Northern Kentucky, approximately 28 miles north of Lexington. We are a rural community with a population of approximately 6,200 within the city and 17,000 in the county. HMH is a locally owned, notfor-profit facility serving Cynthiana and surrounding communities. We have been in existence for more than 100 years and our vision is to become the health care delivery system of choice for the people we serve. Quoting the mission brings me to the heart of this article - why I chose to become an Information Technology Director in a small rural community hospital. Thirty years ago in January, 1978 I “The journey of starting from the ground - moving to the sophisticated network we have today, I recognize it was an honor to have been part of that change in 1994.” began my career at HMH as a file clerk and for the last 16 years I have held the position of IT Director. Thirty years is a long time to work at one place, but I believe it is my love for my home town and the privilege of having employers who value me and my dreams as if they were their own that has been the secret to my existence and my loyalty to HMH. My journey here has been challenging and rewarding as I have witnessed the birth evolution of Information Technology right before my eyes. HMH didn’t have computers in the early days, so IT wasn’t a designated department. Computers did eventually begin to emerge in the accounting department and continued to appear in various departments. Somewhere in the early 1980s, the “data processing department’ at HMH was officially born. Personal IBM XT/AT computers were a rare commodity throughout the facility and the electric typewriters continued to be the norm. In the early 1990s we became the Management Information Systems (MIS) department as we were still a financial-based system running on an IBM 36 midrange platform. Those seemed like simpler times but the challenge of keeping up with all the paper and stand alone systems soon gave way in 1994 to an integrated system called MEDITECH. Life as I had known it would never be the same. The journey of starting from the ground moving to the sophisticated network we have today, I recognize it was an honor to have been part of that change in 1994. HMH Information Technology department, as we are referred to today, 15 SPRING 2009 MUSE INTERNATIONAL Table of Contents Feed for the Digital Edition of Muse Matters - Spring 2009 Muse Matters - Spring 2009 Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 1) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 2) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 3) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 4) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 5) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 6) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 7) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 8) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 9) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 10) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 11) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 12) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 13) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 14) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 15) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 16) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 17) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 18) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 19) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 20) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 21) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 22) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 23) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 24) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 25) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 26) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 27) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 28) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 29) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 30) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 31) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 32) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 33) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 34) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 35) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 36) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 37) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 38) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 39) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 40) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 41) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 42) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 43) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 44) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 45) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 46) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 47) Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 48) http://www.nxtbookMEDIA.com
