Muse Matters - Spring 2009 - (Page 13) MEET THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Why is MUSE important? The goal of MUSE is to provide networking, training, and educational opportunities to its membership, and I think we do a great job at that. However, there is more to MUSE than that one sentence or statement. When you start peeling back the levels (depending on your involvement and/or participation at MUSE events) you notice so much more happening and available to you. One of my favorite topics when speaking to people about MUSE is the potential for personal growth and development when you get involved with an organization like this. MUSE is a perfect venue for someone who has no experience with public speaking in the relatively safe environment of your peers. This group isn't there to judge; they want to talk about the same issues and problems you do. Even if you are an introvert like me, you will soon realize that you can do it and survive, and may even like it! This personal growth experience has the potential to carry over into your home workspace because, with experience, you become more comfortable and self-assured. It's a win for both you and your employer. When you stand at the front of a room, or become a member of the MUSE Board, people know you and put a face with a name. You become a potential contact for many people. The flip side is through involvement with MUSE you have the opportunity to meet many people, both peers and commercial members and can call upon them in a time of need. It's almost like creating your own Help Desk! One of the most important takeaways from my involvement with MUSE is the new friends I've made. It is not unusual to hear current and former volunteers talk about the friends they've made and the feeling of being part of a family. The closeness you feel/develop during your time with MUSE makes it hard to leave when your term is complete. But even after you leave, you still have your friends! Meet Terry Mouland, MUSE International Director-at-Large I was born and raised in Bonavista, Newfoundland and Labrador, a fishing community in Atlantic Canada with a population of approximately 4,500. I now reside in Mount Pearl, NL, and am the Director of Information Management and Technology at St. John’s for Eastern Health. Eastern Health is the largest integrated health organization in Atlantic Canada, serving a regional population of more than 290,000 and offering tertiary or high-level health care services province-wide. Eastern Health employs more than 12,000 health care and support services professionals. In my department there are 130 employees, and we are responsible for Information Systems (Hardware and Software), Telecommunications, Audio Visual Services and Telehealth. When I’m not working, I have a variety of other pursuits.
